Warts are benign lesions that occur on the mucous membranes and skin. These lesions, which are caused by a virus called HPV, are divided into many subtypes. The spread of warts between people occurs through direct or indirect contact. Conditions in which the normal epithelial barrier, which is the upper layer of the skin, is damaged, may predispose to the development of warts.
Normally, most warts are not harmful to the body and disappear on their own within weeks or months without any treatment. However, if it is cosmetically disturbing or occurs in the genital area, it should be treated. The same goes for warts on the soles of the feet that cause pain when walking.
