Herpes Treatment

What is Herpes?

Herpes are small blisters that form around the mouth due to the herpes simplex virus. The most common of the viruses that cause cold sores is type 1 herpes simplex virus. The virus can be spread by kissing or by sharing food utensils and towels.

Herpes simplex cannot be completely eliminated from the body, but it can remain dormant for a long time. Herpes cases do not last more than 2 weeks. The sun, cold wind, cold and certain illnesses, or a weak immune system can cause herpes simplex virus to cause herpes.

Herpes Treatment

If symptoms are severe, treatment may help relieve some symptoms. Treatment usually includes:

  • Antiviral topical ointments (such as acyclovir and penciclovir)
  • Antiviral oral medications (such as acyclovir, famciclovir, and valaciclovir)
  • Over-the-counter topical anesthetics or anti-inflammatory agents

It takes about 1 to 3 weeks for herpes to heal. While they take 3 weeks to heal when they first appear, it usually takes a week for recurrent cold sores, even when no medication is used.
